The 5 groups presented their projects and demoed! And even though everybody worked till the last moment, eventually, with a tiny little delay, we had all of the prototypes ready and working. Bravo!

Preparing for Final Presentations

Final presentations of your projects will happen at 5:00pm on Friday January 21.
You are welcome to invite colleagues, friends and family. Each team will have 10 minutes to demonstrate and discuss their finished posters. In addition to the finished poster, you should prepare a presentation that includes:

concept and design: a discussion of the concept and design of your poster
construction process: a discussion of the process of making the poster
a video of your completed poster
the future: a brief discussion of questions like:
(how) would you change the poster if you had more time?
what did you learn from the workshop?
how will you use the skills you learned in future work?

Make it happen!

This is the moment when it all happens, many things come together, many collapse, break or burn… In the attempt to get it all produced, we all find some last-moment difficulties or we reach the limits of our materials. This is the time to show flexible thinking and creative improvisation

Thermochromic Examples

Here is a video of thermochromic ink examples using 6V and different conductive (resistive) paints (carbon, copper). You can see that the copper paint heats up more evenly and the resistance of the carbon paint is less even and so it sometimes heats up unevenly and only in certain places.

Day 3: group concepts

Final concepts presentation

All the groups presented their final design concepts for the posters. We made sure everybody knows how to continue from here – and now we have to try some concrete tests of the design and the way the material functions.

Here’s a brief update of each group:

Building buildings
As this poster is being touched (by multiple participants) a whole city comes to life

Please,
Thinking of how we interact with hanged pictures, this poster points out how sometimes we can be obsessive about order, making sure the frame is straight. As the poster is moved into orthogonal position, its message is revealed.

Empreinte-moi
Following their chosen quote, this group focuses on the finger and time. This print acts as a clock revealing itself more as time passes by.

The Conversation
A performance in three acts, in which sounds, colors and graphic elements enter into a dialogue upon the poster stage.

Lost in translation
This project attempts to politically engage its viewer. The poster presents a question related and as the participant stays in front of it, an inspiring answer is unveiled.

Day 2: Technology

Introduction to electronics, programming, and new materials
We started with some basic Arduino exercises, mixing the famous “blinking LED” routine, with some interesting materials: conductive / resistive threads, tapes, thermochromic ink and Nitinol. Real fun!

Now, after we’ve seen how these things actually work, we have a better idea of what is feasible in this context and with these materials. The groups continued discussion , brainstorming and designing. At the end of the day all 5 groups presented their design ideas in scaled mock ups of their poster.

MOSFETs

To control the thermochromic inks and nitinol, we’re using the STP16NF06 N-Channel MOSFET. Here’s the datasheet. Here’s a photo & diagram that explain how to attach it to the material and your microcontroller (Arduino):

Day 1: Introductions

Hello et Bonjour!

A quick introductions of the participants and the theme:
We have 15 ENSAD students and 4 MIT students, we will work in 5 mixed groups to create A1 sized posters.
In terms of the technology, we will be using two elements: movement (using Nitinol wire)
and change of colors (using thermochromic ink / liquid crystal paint)

A tour in the ENSAD workshops

We took 2 hours to explore the ENSAD building and visit some of its brilliant ateliers: a great mix of bright spaces, breath taking Parisian view, materials, machines and craft.

Introduction to screen printing

A dive into the hands-on printing experience and some tests of using the new materials: conductive paint and thermochromic Ink with this process.
